The 400th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the Western Hemisphere/the New World, was an occasion of great celebration across the United States. Considering that the last big party was in 1876—thank you for the Statue of Liberty, France—and that there had been economic turmoil into the 1890s, there was an incentive to celebrate. The Catholic Church would feel that pull strongly, as Spain made the Christianizing [Catholicizing] of the New World one of its two main goals, along with economic enrichment of the homeland. It is also true that the Catholic Church had achieved the status of the largest denomination in the USA, and the majority denomination in the Western Hemisphere. Consequently, a book like this, written from within the faith at this moment, will have a certain tone that is expected when adherents write in celebration.
This is a true first edition. The provenance of this book is visible in the library markings. This book was held in the library of the Abbey of the Genesee, a Trappist monastery in Piffard NY. The abbey deaccessioned books where it had duplicates or ready access to the knowledge in other formats.
Condition: The cover and bindings are Poor to Fair. The back cover is detached from the spine about 2 pages from the end. In addition, there are numerous library markings as this is an ex-libris copy. The text sections and the illustrations are in Good condition.
