This is the catalog accompanying an exhibition mounted by the Newark Museaum. THeir website describes it this way: Wendy Red Star: A Scratch on the Earthis a mid-career survey of the work of Portland artist Wendy Red Star (born 1981, Billings, Montana). Drawing on pop culture, conceptual art strategies, and the Crow traditions in which she was raised, Red Star pushes photography in new directions—from self-portraiture to photo-collage and mixed media—to bring to life her unique perspective on American history. An enrolled member of the Apsáalooke (Crow) Tribe, Red Star works across disciplines to explore the intersections of Native American ideologies and colonialist structures. With more than 40 works highlighting Red Star’s production from 2006 to 2019, the exhibition includes photography, textiles, film and sound installations. At the heart of the exhibition a new immersive video will be screened inside a sweat lodge constructed by the artist.
One of the pleasures of the book trade is the serendipitous encounter with a new artist or author, and with a terrific book. This qualifies. From a naive art lover’s perspective, this is wonderful. Red Star has limitless imagination and inventiveness. The varied media, the intense use of symbols and color, the way crowded compositions cohere as a whole but resolve to distinct parts, all of it works. Then there is the additional pleasure of scrutinizing the works for meaning and then checking that sense against the exbibit notes and the artist’s intent. This was her first exhibit, apparently. Her oeuvre is growing and maintaining the standards set in this exhibit.
