Self-description of the book: Robert L. Riggs was a Philadelphia based artist noted for his work in illustration, painting, and printmaking--a keen observer in the fields of boxing, the circus, and medicine and a producer of superb, well executed lithographs in these areas. This is the first scholarly effort to bring all his prints together in one volume and to examine his work as an artist. All of his distinctive lithographs are reproduced here. Fully illustrated catalogue raisonné of 84 lithographs produced between 1932 and 1950, p. 56-98. Chronology, biographical essay; comments, edition size, collections, exhibition history and reproductions noted for each print; and bibliography.
Riggs was captivated by the volcanic energy of boxing and the raucous gimcrackery of the circus. Those are logically connected. Where medicine comes in is opaque. He had a nifty eye for the striking image. The plates are very interesting to see. Lithography is a less used printing medium than in the past, and tht old timey feel jibes well with his subjects.
