The Countries of Europe by Mrs. Sarah Jane Hale
Full title: The Countries of Europe and the Manners and Customs of its Various Nations
Author: Mrs. Sarah Jane Hale
Illustrated by J. H. Howard
Publisher: McLoughlin Brothers, New York, 1860
Hardcover
Page Count: 58
In the absence of national textbook publishers and standard curriculums, the mid-18th century market was open to small publishers and boutique books. Mrs. Hale found a niche and worked with the McLoughlin Brothers house to issue children’s books. Her texts were pretty basic, but the books are lovely for their illustrations. This book on Europe is a perfect example. The images seem hand painted though they are probably from the press. Considering that Harpers Weekly and most books and periodicals were printed in black and white, the color plates represent a major hope that parents and schools would pay extra. They seem to have, for there were many books issued in this format, and Mrs. Hale became a well-known author.
Condition: Fair in terms of the cover and the solidity of the binding. But considering this is a school/youth-oriented books that is 165 years old, it is in remarkably good condition. The text pages are clean and in the illustrations sparkle.
