Night of the Silent Drums by John Lorenzo Anderson, Illustrated Edition

$39.00

Author: John Lorenzo Anderson

Publisher: MAPes MONDe Editore 1992

Page Count: 449

Hardcover

Wherever you turn within the colonialist world there will be tragedy and massacre at some point. A common scenario: slaves on a small island refuse to live in servitude any longer. They rise up. The colonial power ships in overwhelming force and the rebels are subdued and killed and re-enslaved. Again and again and again, yet the colonialists still feel they are doing God’s work or bringing ‘civilization’.

This terrible moment occurred on the Caribbean Island of St. Jan. Denmark was the colonial power, and whatever Denmark’s image in the present they reacted with Viking brutality in the past. The author caught hints of the old story when vacationing there in the 1930s and pieced the revolt’s history together from archives and oral history. This updated version adds very welcome visuals from the time.

You may wonder where St. Jan is. It was purchased by the USA in 1917 and renamed as St. John’s, part of the US Virgin Islands. Another layer of history to drill through.

Condition: Very Good in all aspects.
