Ravilious in Pictures by James Russell, Set of 3
Author: James Russell
Publisher: The Mainstone Press, 2009, 2020, 2011
Hardcover
Vol. 1: Sussex and the Downs, 2009, ISBN: 978-0-9552777-3-3, 48pgs
Vol. 2: The War Paintings, 2010, ISBN: 978-09552777-40, 48 pgs
Vol.3: A Country Life, 2011, ISBN: 978-09552777-64, 48pg
This is 3 volumes of a 4-volume set of Ravilious’s work. It lacks volume 4, Ravilious in Pictures: A Travelling Artist. Each volume is a selection of one of the phases of his painting career. Beyond painting he did distinguished work in design, murals, and printmaking. He died in wartime service in 1942, leaving the eternal question of how an artist dying young would have evolved.
As a watercolorist he puzzles the viewer. Some of it seems flat, a sort of Grandma Moses bringing everything to the foreground. Then you see enough depth to realize it is a choice, not weak technique. The painting itself is strongly reminiscent of Seurat, but he uses small strokes rather than points. Still, there is a shimmering quality that appeals, especially for the landscape and open-air works. Finally, he uses the softer colors of the palette, which gives the illusion that the painting is starting to fade. All in all, he takes the most conventional of subject matter and makes you look at it afresh and with new pleasure.
Condition: Very Good to Excellent in all aspects.
