History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolsheviks)
Author: Edited by a commission of the Central Committee of the C.P.S.U.(B.) and authorized by the Central Committee of the C.P.S.U.(B.)
Publisher: International Publishers Co., Inc., New York, 1939
Hardcover
Page Count: 364
This is the famous short course for actual and aspiring Communist Party members. Published in 1939 as Stalin was completing the Great Terror, it was his interpretation of CPSU history. Many famous forebears were eliminated or downgraded in the history, and Stalin was of course elevated to secular God status.
Calling it a short history at 346 pages seems grimly funny. What was the long course like? Another dark echo is the resemblance to Luther’s Short Catechism, designed to lead the novice Christian or unlettered peasant to God. Stalin, a seminary student in his youth, would have known this and chuckled his mordant chuckle. In fact, this book is a political catechism. Party members had to know it and believe it. There was no acceptable alternative.
Very good condition. All covers firmly attached. Pages are unmarked and unfaded. A former owner has crimped in his bookplate information onto the frontispiece.
