French Town by Carl Carmer, Signed by the illustrator Frederic Hicks

$50.00

Poems by Carl Carmer

Sketches by Frederic Hicks

Signed by Frederic Hicks

Preface by Grace King

Publisher: The Quarter’s Book Shop, New Orleans, 1928

Hardcover

Page Count: 52

Carl Carmer is perceived mostly as a regional writer given his large volume of central and western NY themed works. In fact, he had a much broader range, starting with his first book, Stars Fell On Alabama. His attentiveness to local stories and culture was national in scope, and he became a folklore consultant to Disney. Later on, he became the editor of the justly beloved Rivers of America series, writing volumes on the Hudson, the Susquehanna, and the Genesee.

Carmer had other talents, including producing regional folk song albums. His attentiveness to language encouraged him to become a poet, hence French Town. As one would expect, New Orleans is the theme. New Orleans hypnotizes writers! The poems are satisfactory. They are given extra pizzazz from the illustrations by Frederic Hicks. Copies of this book are rarely signed, but this copy has Hicks big and bold signature.
